Taking Care of Business: Your Employees Stink – Really

John R. Hall
January 11, 2008
No, that headline isn’t a typo. Some of your employees really stink and they could be turning off your customers. I’m not talking about physiology such as body odor or bad breath. Lord knows I suffer from both. No, I’m talking about odors from tobacco, i.e., cigarettes, cigars, or yes – marijuana.

I Think... There's a Little Chicken Little in All of Us

John Conrad
January 10, 2008
Did you read about how our unemployment has “climbed” to 5 percent and on top of that the stock market only went up 7 percent in 2007. I also saw an e-mail today about a 15 percent drop in attendance for the upcoming International Builders Show in February. Oh no! The sky is falling.

Taking Care of Business: Rocky and Indy Give Old Techs Hope

John R. Hall
January 3, 2008
Last year saw the return of Rocky Balboa starring the ageless Sylvester Stallone. This year we will see Indiana Jones again, starring another famous senior citizen Harrison Ford. Those two guys make me feel like a youngster, although they look a little better than me (at least with all of the pancake makeup on).

I Think... There Must Be Something in the Air!

John Conrad
January 2, 2008
What is going on with the unitary air conditioning companies this year? Trane sells off the American Standard plumbing business and then is taken over by Ingersoll-Rand. Goodman is bought by another holding company.

Taking Care of Business: Send That Furnace a Greeting Card

John R. Hall
December 20, 2007
No, I haven’t been hitting the eggnog … yet. Is there any rule that says you have to send a greeting card to an animate object? Not that I know of. For some of you contractors who know where I am headed and know the spiel, bear with me. For those of you who think the headline is just an attention grabber and nothing more, listen up.

Skaer-Tactics: Vote for...Who? Pedro? Part 2

Mark Skaer
December 19, 2007
Over the holidays, time permitting, I plan to sit down at my computer and explore ALL of the Websites of ALL of the candidates vying for the White House. Right now I am leaning toward voting for Hilary Clinton, but I can definitely state I am not totally convinced that she is the right person to be the next President of the United States.

Taking Care of Business: Ice Storms Reminds Us of HVAC Importance

John R. Hall
December 13, 2007
The recent ice storms stretching across the nation’s midsection have brought a stark reminder about what is necessary to sustain life. I’m not talking about comfort - I am talking about life. The residents and business owners of many communities are dealing with no electricity, no heat, and no water - the very things necessary to sustain life.

Murphy's Law: Taking Responsibility Isn't Enough

Mike Murphy
Mike Murphy
December 11, 2007
I’ve run into people in the past that believe taking responsibility for one’s actions somehow makes non-performance OK. It doesn’t. What if your spouse had an affair, and came to you with the line, “I take complete responsibility for my actions”?

Taking Care of Business: Forbes.com Rewarding One Lucky Entrepreneur

John R. Hall
December 10, 2007
How cool is this? Forbes.com just wrapped up the voting in its first Boost Your Business contest. Nearly 1,000 contestants entered the contest, which boasts a $100,000 grand prize. The five finalists made their cases before a panel of judges in New York City recently.

Skaer-Tactics: Next U.S. President Should Be [Fill in Here]

Mark Skaer
December 7, 2007
OK, I knew that headline might grab you, but I really DO want to know whom I should vote for in 2008. Who is the best person to step in after George W. (thankfully?) walks away? Really, I seek your input here. Give it to me.
