The TA² is a high-efficiency household refrigerator compressor with a cooling capacity of 300-800 Btuh that is optimized for use with ecofriendly hydrocarbon (HC) refrigerant R600a (isobutene). 

Compressor manufacturer Bitzer has approved the hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) refrigerants R-1234yf and R-1234ze(E) for its CSH and CSW screw compressors. The two alternatives to R-134a have a global warming potential (GWP) of less than 10.

Embraco announced that Luis Felipe Dau has been named the company’s new global president. Dau had been serving as vice president of business and marketing. Dau began his role as president on March 1.

Ninety percent of compressor failures can be attributed to problems found elsewhere in the system. And, serious consequences can result if technicians don’t determine the true source of the compressor failure.

As manufacturers research the viability of low-GWP and other natural refrigerants, they face the concurrent challenges of ensuring compressors are efficient, safe, and reliable.

A common complaint throughout the HVACR industry is that when new technicians enter the industry, they don’t have the skills and knowledge that employers expect. One area where this is evident is in the field of compressor service. 

As the DOE mandates minimum efficiency performance and the EPA delists ozone-depleting refrigerants, manufacturers are being tapped to create speed-controlled compressors that run on an array of natural refrigerants.
