At a time when many North American trade shows are experiencing declining exhibitor participation and delegate attendance, the recent CIPHEX West trade show and conference in Calgary bucked this trend. Carrier Corp. sold its Dettson residential heating operations in Canada to the Ouellet Group, a manufacturer of electric heating systems based in Quebec. Dettson is primarily a residential oil heating products manufacturer with 125 employees and revenues of approximately $20 million in 2009.
Westech Energy Training Center announced it will offer a “Preparation for 5th Class Power Engineering” course. The course, which will begin Jan. 8, 2011, will be taught by D. Brian Baker and will primarily be formatted through lecture and assignments.
Noble (www.noble.ca), a subsidiary of distributor Rona Inc., has acquired the assets of MPH Supply Ltd. MPH, which specializes in the distribution of plumbing products, operates five branches in Vancouver and the lower mainland.
According to the Canadian Institute of Plumbing & Heating (CIPH), its September 2010 PHCP Wholesalers’ Sales Report showed sales were up 8.4 percent. CIPH reported that September was a $509 million dollar month, and noted, “The industry has not seen these numbers since 2008.”
A new low-rise residential sheet metal installer trade certificate is being proposed by the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities (MTCU) to better serve the needs of the residential HVAC sector. The new trade will be a separate branch of the existing Sheet Metal Worker trade.
