While the geothermal industry is enjoying the growth, many are focused on 2016, when the tax credits are set to expire. The existing tax credit grants a 30 percent incentive for residential projects and 10 percent for commercial projects.

LSB Industries Inc. announced that Richard Aldridge has been appointed president of its ClimateMaster Inc. subsidiary, a geothermal heat pump manufacturer and the largest business in LSB’s Climate Control segment. Aldridge previously served as vice president of operations for the Climate Control Business.

ClimateMaster Inc. has announced the groundbreaking of Moore, Oklahoma-headquartered McAlister Construction Inc.’s Avondale residential development project, which will feature geothermal heating and cooling systems across 100 percent of its homes.  

NIBE, which acquired a 10 percent interest in the company in November 2011, announced that it has acquired the remaining 90 percent of North American geothermal heat pump manufacturer Enertech Global LLC.

While traditional hospital HVAC systems often consist of chillers and boilers, other types of equipment are becoming more widely accepted in the health care market, including variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems, air curtains, and geothermal heat pumps. 

IKEA announced that all underground geothermal work is complete for its future Kansas City-area store, which will be the largest single building with geothermal heating and cooling in either Kansas or Missouri.

WaterFurnace Renewable Energy Inc. and NIBE Industrier AB of Sweden announced that they have entered into an agreement whereby NIBE will acquire 100 percent of the outstanding shares of WaterFurnace by way of a plan of arrangement under the Canada Business Corporations Act.

Working on these mega homes is a great opportunity for HVAC contractors, but there can also be many challenges in this line of work.
