The industry continues to combat the issue of contractors pulling a Bruce Willis. No, we’re talking about “Die Hard.” They’re “Moonlighting.” Except, not as private detectives.
According to the Air Conditioning Contractors of America, the two main reasons contractors moonlight — or take side jobs — are for extra income or they enjoy taking on smaller projects for friends, family, and neighbors. As nice as that is, taking on side jobs exposes both technicians and their employers to risks, including legal and liability. Instead of banning it, companies should instead set clear expectations about outside work. Companies can also explore a formal friends-and-family discount program or performance incentives that allow techs to help loved ones with company backing. In turn, companies reduce risks and build trust with employees and customers.
