In most homes, ductwork carries conditioned air from the HVAC units throughout the house. But with as much as 40 percent of that air leaking out before it ever reaches the vent, according to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), it seems there is still room for improvement in most customers’ homes. Enter the HVAC technician.

The average home’s ductwork leaks 30 percent or more. And while some model building codes now require duct-leakage testing and sealing, there is still a significant amount of work to be done — and a significant amount of energy to be saved.

Aeroseal announced that it has been approved by Home Innovations Labs as a National Green Building Standard (NGBS) product. Homebuilders looking to receive NGBS certification may now use Aeroseal to fulfill the standard’s mandatory requirements for HVAC duct sealing.

Air Care, a Chandler, Ariz.-based HVAC contractor, announced that it is providing Aeroseal duct sealing with the purchase of a new air conditioning unit. The offer applies to all new air conditioning units purchased from and installed by Air Care for a limited time.

Avista Utilities has announced its new Manufactured Home Duct Sealing Program, which enables qualifying customers in Washington to have their home’s ductwork sealed and receive other energy efficiency products at no cost. Avista said the service, a $500 value, can help customers save up to 30 percent on their energy bill.

Aeroseal seals leaks from the inside of the duct system. Applied as a non-toxic aerosol mist, it is pumped throughout the interior of the ductwork where it accumulates and bonds around the various gaps and leaks throughout the system. 

The DP 1090 solvent-based duct sealer is Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design- (LEED) qualified as a low-emitting sealant with volatile organic compounds less than 50 grams/liter. The sealant skins in less than a minute to help installers avoid the clean-up commonly associated with solvent-based duct sealers.
