An HVAC Minute Video Update: May 20, 2025
As HVACR distributors across the U.S. brace for the busy summer months, a critical shortage of R-454B refrigerant cylinders is creating mounting challenges. While new equipment pre-charged with the A2L refrigerant remains available, the aftermarket supply needed for installations and service work has become increasingly scarce. What began as a relatively smooth transition from has been derailed by a mix of supply chain setbacks. Distributors and contractors alike report unpredictable lead times and little communication from suppliers regarding when backlogged orders will be fulfilled. In response, companies like Gustave A. Larson Co. in Wisconsin have imposed purchasing limits and tied refrigerant sales to equipment orders, hoping to stretch their limited stock through the peak season. Others like Meier Supply in New York have been more insulated, having stocked up on R-410A equipment and implementing strict sales controls on R-454B. Their strategy appears to be working — for now. Despite cautious optimism, the industry is navigating a volatile and uncertain environment. Distributors are adapting by tightening inventory strategies and maintaining close contact with suppliers. While how the situation will truly unfold remains to be seen, it seems industry stakeholders are all in all hopeful the shortage will be resolved soon, enabling them to support contractors and meet demand during the busy cooling season.
