After finishing his service in the military, Scott Wood relocated to Florida. In 2005, a friend introduced him to his supervisor at a local air conditioning company.
“Little did I know I was being interviewed. He offered an apprenticeship job on the spot to learn about air conditioning and heating,” Scott said. “I worked my way into installs, and then maintenance, followed by a service technician position.”
During this time, he took many courses on HVAC, sales, communication, and leadership to help refine his skills.
“After a while, I realized I was pretty good at restoring the comfort in clients’ homes and businesses while maintaining long-term relationships with my clients. It was then I decided that this was the career path that I wanted to conquer,” Scott said.
Scott is currently the general manager for McCarthy’s One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning in Omaha. He and his family moved across the country from Florida specifically for this opportunity last year.
In the short time Scott has been with McCarthy’s, he has made the company more profitable than it had been in several years. They went from a double-digit downfall to an acceptable profitability within eight months.
Scott frequently assists with maintenance, install, repair, and indoor air quality jobs while still upholding his office duties.
“My goal currently has been to refine our organization’s culture with forward-thinking and innovative strategies while closing the gap our industry faces with employee retention. Every employee is an investment that I take personally,” Scott said.
