Ice Breaker: Reducing Flash Gas

Less flash gas equals a higher net refrigerating effect and a more efficient system. Many designers reduce the amount of flash gas by additionally subcooling the liquid refrigerant entering the metering device. This lowers the refrigerant temperature; meaning less refrigerant will flash off to cool itself down to the evaporating temperature.

HFOs Take Another Step

As the HVACR industry looks at possible refrigerants beyond HFCs, attention is being paid to HFOs. In recent years, DuPont and Honeywell have been jointly doing research on HFO-1234yf for use in auto air conditioning in Europe where HFCs are being phased out in that application. HFOs are also being looked at for stationary equipment.

And at both the National Restaurant Association (NRA) show and Food Marketing Institute (FMI) expo, exhibitors were promoting refrigeration products that either have already been certified to those standards, or were in line to win approval.

Students Look to Future With Green Eye

The National Student Energy Survey found that most of the 4,611 participating middle and high school students indicated strong support for renewable energy. But while the survey shows that many students are optimistic about America’s energy future, some of that optimism comes from a lack of awareness of the true facts, according to the survey’s organizer.

Manufacturers Respond to DOE Noncompliance Action

On June 3, the Department of Energy (DOE) issued a notice of noncompliance for three manufacturers of evaporative coils. In response, all three companies stated that there were errors in the data used to evaluate their compliance with federal energy conservation standards, and that they did not distribute any noncompliant models.

The de-valuing of the word green by attaching it to everything from furniture polish to soldering flux has gotten completely out of control. I am starting a movement to return green to its former glory by offering some alternatives to the now over-exposed and cliché use of the word.
