The gap between electricity generation and use could be narrowed with an Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) system that extracts energy from thin air. Actually, the system, called Ground-Level Integrated Diverse Energy Storage or GLIDES, stores electricity mechanically in the form of compressed gas that displaces water in high-pressure vessels.

Johnson Controls and Tyco today announced that they have entered into a definitive merger agreement under which Johnson Controls, a global multi-industrial company, will combine with Tyco, a global fire and security provider, to create a leading provider of HVAC, controls, fire, security, and power solutions.
The new Building Load Deferment (BLD) system, from HIGHMARK, New York City, is a pre-engineered thermal energy storage system, enabling energy usage to be deferred to off-peak hours via ice storage and then utilizing that ice for the building’s chilled water system during peak hours, for energy savings of up to 50 percent.
