With a new administration in Washington, the HVACR industry is once again navigating a wave of regulatory uncertainty. Jennifer Butsch, Director of Regulatory Affairs at Copeland, breaks down the key issues contractors need to keep on their radar — from refrigerant phaseouts and evolving efficiency standards to the future of government incentives. Leading the charge is the EPA’s Technology Transitions Rule, pushing the industry toward low-GWP refrigerants. But things got interesting in March when new EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin kicked off a “day of deregulation,” rolling back 31 measures — including a major rethink of the 2023 Technology Transitions Rule. Also in flux: IRA tax credits and the potential defunding of the ENERGY STAR program, which could reshape consumer incentives and product strategies. Add in delays and reversals to HVAC efficiency standards, and contractors are left wondering where DOE requirements stand. Still, Butsch encourages professionals to stay steady. The landscape may shift, but the mission to keep contractors informed and ready for what’s next hasn’t changed.
