HVACR industry input is being sought into a proposal to modify portions of ASHRAE’s refrigeration safety standard to incorporate subclass 2L flammability classifications. Addendum d to ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 15-2013, Safety Standard for Refrigeration Systems, is open for public comment until Jan. 18, 2016.

The world is changing and the refrigeration industry is changing along with it, but the refrigeration field is strong and will continue to be a great industry to work in for the next generation.

It’s very important to follow all safety procedures and retrofit guidelines when retrofitting a system with a refrigerant blend. By all means, never try to blend any refrigerants yourself because dangerous conditions and personal injury can occur.

Although it’s commonly acknowledged that there is no one-size-fits-all answer, natural refrigerants, such as carbon dioxide (R-744), ammonia (R-717), and the hydrocarbon (HC) refrigerants propane (R-290) and isobutane (R-600), have been garnering attention.

Master-Bilt®, manufacturer of commercial refrigeration equipment, has introduced its new Alternative Industrial Refrigerant (AIR) Initiative which outlines the use of hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) blended refrigerants and foaming agents to meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Significant New Alternative Policy (SNAP) guidelines.

Danfoss recently hosted its 25^th EnVisioneering Symposium, which addressed how an increasing industry-wide focus on refrigerants and energy is driving changes in the design, deployment, and maintenance of refrigeration equipment and supermarkets.

Airgas, Radnor, Pennsylvania, will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Air Liquide, based in Paris, France, under an agreement reached between the two companies. Airgas is a leading supplier of industrial gases and associated products and services in the United States. 

Diversified Pure Chem (DPC) has launched a nationwide initiative to purchase recovered R-410A. Through this program, DPC reimburses HVACR professionals based on the refrigerant’s weight and purity, and issues a payment within 30 days of receiving the gas.

The amendment, deemed the “Dubai Pathway,” is expected to be completed in 2016 and puts to rest an ongoing discussion regarding HFC usage that’s persisted among Montreal Protocol members for more than five years. 

Emerson Climate Technologies Inc. addressed issues like the delisting of specific gases in certain applications and energy consumption reduction regulations at its E360 event held Sept. 3 at the Westin Dallas Fort Worth Airport Hotel in Dallas.
