Net Metering Now Available for New York's Micro-CHP Users

New York state homeowners now have an added incentive to install micro-combined heat and power (micro-CHP) systems. The New York State Public Service Commission approved tariff filings that pave the way for homeowners who install the systems to receive credit for excess electricity they generate and sell back to their utilities.

Home STAR and Building STAR Legislation to Stimulate Energy Savings and Jobs Creation

Congressional leaders have introduced two bills - Home STAR and Building STAR - that use short-term rebates to promote energy efficiency. Each of these programs is expected to create a minimum 150,000 jobs, many of them in the hard-hit construction sector and in related industries, including HVAC.

Honeywell Completes Stimulus-Backed Solar Project

Honeywell announced that it has installed the first of two solar photovoltaic arrays for the city of Wilmington, Del. The work was highlighted during a commemoration event showcasing successful projects backed by the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA).

Smart Grid Could Reduce Energy Use by 12 Percent

A smart electrical power grid could decrease annual electric energy use as well as carbon emissions by at least 12 percent by 2030, according to a new report from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).

Health Care Facility Relies on Standby Power for All Loads, Including HVAC

When Halifax Health recently added the new 10-story France Tower to the campus for inpatient and emergency treatment, it selected a 4.5 MW MTU Onsite Energy standby power system. With power outages common in Florida, officials sized the system to supply all the loads in the new tower, including HVAC.

Veolia Energy North America awarded a design/build contract to Progressive AE to upgrade its Grand Rapids district heating and cooling system. The firm is designing and installing a cutting-edge condensing heat exchanger, a sophisticated heat recovery technology that will reduce the volume of fuel consumed by at least 5 percent.

Through its Advanced Reciprocating Engine Systems (ARES) program, the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) seeks to help industry take advantage of reduced natural gas prices by introducing options for engine development for distributed energy and combined heat and power (CHP) applications.

Parabolic Trough Solar Technology Provides Hot Water, Heating and Cooling

Abengoa Solar is building large-scale parabolic trough solar installations in Arizona and New York. The hot water produced at the Arizona plant will be used in the treatment of contaminated water. In the New York application, solar energy will deliver heating, cooling, and humidity control for the manufacturing facilities at a piano factory.
