In a settlement announced Sept. 3 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Justice, Costco will pay $335,000 in penalties for federal Clean Air Act violations and improve refrigerant management at 274 stores at an estimated cost of $2 million over the next three years.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) have announced a settlement with Costco Wholesale Corp. in which the company agrees to pay $335,000 in penalties for federal Clean Air Act violations and improve refrigerant management at 274 stores.
Kansas City Power & Light (KCP&L) provides electricity to more than 800,000 customers in 47 northwest Missouri and eastern Kansas counties. Recently the utility had to deal with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) compliance surrounding sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) management.

Contractors Should Discuss the Disposal Fee with Their Customers

Refrigerant Management Canada (RMC) announced that the disposal fee for accepting CFC‐11 refrigerant into the program has changed. Effective July 1, 2013, the disposal fee will be $12/kilogram for CFC‐11 refrigerant entering the program for destruction.
At some point, a refrigerant brought back for reclamation simply can’t be brought back to ARI-700 purity standards. There are a couple of approaches, including, destruction, which has a long track record, and, another option, conversion, offers a much fresher approach.
With supplies of some refrigerants dwindling, costs rising, and recordkeeping and venting regulations in place, the need for careful refrigerant management is needed more than ever. That being the case, more and more manufacturers are coming out with products to address the need.
