With the busy season approaching, a common thread in the HVAC world is “Where on earth am I going to find a qualified technician?” Another constant concern in our industry is improving the company ranking on Google. In this article, I will lay out a simple process that HVAC contractors can use to accomplish both of these goals.

Currently, Vet2Tech has approximately 1,500 companies from across the U.S. signed up for the program. Every vet who takes part in the program has his or her resume sent to 25-30 employers. It is a pretty powerful program.

The challenge of recruiting and retaining great technicians is a problem that every contractor will face. Find the best techs and see them flourish with the help of software.

Could sponsorship of sporting events be a way to gain the interest of young people and perhaps increase their awareness of the opportunities available to them in the HVACR industry? For example, with college football bowl season approaching, I’m thinking the industry should look into uniting to sponsor a bowl game.

What if, instead of a prospective star athlete sitting at the podium, it was a potential HVAC technician? Would this drum up interest in HVAC? What if the industry treated its future prospects as the stars that they are?

The shortage of well-trained HVAC technicians has plagued the industry for years and projections insist the problem isn’t going away anytime soon. However, many are finding qualified, desciplined help from those who once donned uniforms decorated with different badges and stripes.

While plenty of attention needs to be spent making sure students know what a great industry HVAC is to work in, it is also imperative the industry give the same amount of attention to training those interested in making HVAC their career.
