Turning Green In New York
The projects are to comply with New York State Executive Order No. 111, “Green and Clean State Buildings and Vehicles,” which requires state agencies to be more energy efficient and environmentally aware.
One of the goals is to reduce the energy use of state buildings 35%, compared to 1990 levels, by the year 2010. The law further encourages environmentally conscious design by referencing the New York State Green Buildings Tax Credit and the LEED rating system of the U.S. Green Building Council.
Steven Winter Associates, Inc. (SWA), the green/LEED consultant on the projects, conducted a workshop sponsored by the Department of Environmental Conservation and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), which was attended by representatives of the various state agencies, architects, and consultants. SWA also reported on the projects’ progress.
