People for the Week: 03/12/2001

ATLANTA, GA — The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) recognized 53 people for their contributions to ASHRAE and the hvacr industry at the Society's recent 2001 Winter Meeting held here.

The society elevated 15 members to the grade of Fellow ASHRAE. Fellow ASHRAE is a membership grade that recognizes distinction in the arts and sciences of environmental technology. The honor is earned through achievement as a researcher, designer, educator or engineering executive. Recipients included:

  • David Arnold, Ph.D., FREng, senior partner at Troup, Bywaters and Anders, Reading, England;
  • Robert Burkhardt, P.E., chairman of the board of directors, Robert G. Burkhardt Associates Inc. Consulting Engineers, Chicago, IL;
  • James Crawford, director of regulatory affairs, The Trane Company, Tyler, TX;
  • Donald Fiorino, P.E., manager of boiler and steam systems, Energy Asset Management Best Practices, Enron Energy Services, Houston, TX;
  • Reinhold Kittler, P.Eng., chief engineer, Dectron Inc., Montreal, PQ, Canada;
  • Francois L'Anglais, P.Eng., Life Member, retired and living in Sillery, PQ, Canada;
  • Jean Lebrun, Ph.D., professor, University of Liege, Liege, Belgium;
  • Shuzo Murakami, Ph.D., professor, Institute of Industrial Science, University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan;
  • Eng Hong Ng, Ph.D., deputy director of the Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing Department, Singapore Polytechnic, Singapore;
  • Bjarne Olesen, Ph.D., manager of research and development, Wirsbo-Velta, Nordersted, Germany;
  • Samuel Sami, Ph.D., P.Eng., professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Moncton, Moncton, NB, Canada;
  • George Sestak, P.E., senior project engineer, AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, Wilmington, DE;
  • Clay Smith, P.E., president, Clay D. Smith, P.E., and Associates, LaFayette, NY;
  • Yuri Tabunschikov, Ph.D., head of the Department of Engineering, Moscow University of Architecture (State Academy) and president of the Russian Association of Engineering for Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, Heat Supply and Building Thermal Physics (ABOK), Moscow; and
  • Sunny Tan, principal of Building Services Consultant, Singapore.
  • The ASHRAE Technology Awards recognize outstanding achievements by members who have successfully applied innovative building designs incorporating ASHRAE standards for effective energy management and indoor air quality.

    The Technology Award first-place winners are:

  • Roland Charneux for the Pavillon Président-Kennedy (University Science Building), Université du Quebéc à Montréal, Montreal, PQ, Canada, in the institutional buildings, new, category.
  • Charneux is vice president of operation and coo for Pageau Morel and Associés Inc., Montreal, PQ, Canada.

  • Jeffrey Celuch for a hybrid chilled-water plant, Capital University, Columbus, OH, in the institutional buildings, existing, category. Celuch is team leader and project manager at ThermalTech Engineering, Cincinnati, OH.
  • Paul Torcellini, Ph.D., P.E., and Otto Van Geet, P.E., for the Otto Van Geet residence, Idaho Springs, CO, in the alternative and/or renewable energy use category. Torcellini is senior engineer I and Van Geet is senior project leader II at National Renewal Energy Laboratory, Golden, CO.
  • The second-place winners are:

  • David Peters, P.E., for the J.D. Edwards buildings, Denver, Colorado, in the commercial buildings, new, category. Peters is senior vice president of engineering of the Colorado Division at Southland Industries, Englewood, CO.
  • Marc Rosenbaum, P.E., and Daniel Lewis, P.E., for the James L. and Evelena S. Oakes Hall, Vermont Law School, South Royalton, VT, in the institutional buildings, new, category. Rosenbaum is principal at Energysmiths, Meriden, NH. Lewis is a partner in Kohler and Lewis, Keene, NH.
  • John King for the University of Western Australia, Crawley Campus Mechanical Retrofit, Perth, Western Australia, Australia, in the institutional buildings, existing, category. King is senior technical officer mechanical at the University of Western Australia, Perth, Western Australia, Australia.
  • Scott Ward for the Schwan's Super Rink, Blaine, MN, in the public assembly, new, category. Ward is project engineer at Bonestroo, Rosene, Anderlik and Associates Inc., St. Paul, MN.
  • Dianne Griffiths for The Carbury, Humble, TX, in the residential, new, category. Griffiths is senior engineer at Steve Winter Associates Inc., Norwalk, CT.
  • The ASHRAE Student Design Project Competition challenged teams of undergraduate students to develop architectural design, hvac system design or system selection of an educational building for a college campus in Greenville, SC.

    In the Architectural Design Category, the recipients are:

  • First Place: Andrew Herland and Troy Jacoby, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in Milwaukee, WI.
  • Second Place: Edson Salerno Jr., Universidade Paulista, Ribeirão Preto City, Brazil.
  • In the HVAC System Design Category: the recipients are:

  • First Place: John Damoth, Leon Greiner, Brian Holton, Sam, Lampe, Martin McDonough, John Quilitzsch, Glenn Remington, and Steven Turnbull, Ferris State University, Big Rapids, MI.
  • Second Place: Zachary Russi and Zacharie Webber, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA.

    In the HVAC System Selection Category, the recipients are:

  • First Place: Leye Adegbite, Jason Cooper, Kevin Dettling, Ken Frieling, Bill Hoch, Troy Milan, Jeff Oosting, Adrian Subryan, Jeremy Tell, Chris Weaver and Adam Wilson, Ferris State University, Big Rapids, MI.
  • Second Place: Michael Eskra, Doug Stingelin and Scott Walthour, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA.
  • The E.K. Campbell Award honors outstanding achievements by engineering educators. The recipient is David Tree, Ph.D., a professor and director of industrial contracts at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN.

  • Baltic International USA, Inc. (Houston, TX) has hired Tom Taylor as president of its refrigerant reclamation company, Advanced Reclamation Co.
  • Harvey M. Sachs, Ph.D., has accepted the position of director, buildings programs with the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE). The program includes a wide range of efforts focused on standards and market transformation for the residential and commercial sectors.
  • Virgis W. Colbert, executive vice president of Miller Brewing Co., has been appointed to the board of directors of Manitowoc Co., Inc. (Manitowoc, WI)
  • H.E. "Buzz" Johnson, vice president of engineering and chief technical officer for EnLink Geoenergy Services, Inc. (Houston, TX) has been elected to the advisory board of the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association (IGSHPA).
  • Gerald A. Nicholson was named president of the Engineered Coil business unit (dba Marlo Coil, High Ridge, MO) of engineered Support Systems, Inc.
  • Intertek Testing Services' (ITS, Boxborough, MA) ETL SEMKO named Jeff Turcotte vice president of marketing.
  • Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Wholesalers international (ARWI) has newly elected officers. They are:

    – president Paul Goulet, Westburne refrigeration & Hvac Inc., St. Leonard, PQ, Canada;

    – vice president Johnnie Drury, Fox Appliance Parts of Atlanta, Inc., Lake City, GA;

    – secretary-treasurer Gary Burke, Burke Engineering Co., South El Monte, CA; and

    – immediate past president James F. Luce, Luce, Schwab & Kase, Inc., Fairfield, NJ.

    Also elected were three new board members, who are:

    – Mark Faessler, Progress supply inc., Cincinnati, OH;

    – Frank Meier Jr., Meier Suplly Co., Inc., Binghampton, NY; and

    – Mark Westphal, Heatcraft Inc., Stone Mountain, GA.

  • Johnstone Supply, Inc. (Portland, OR), has appointed Monte Salsman vice president of marketing/merchandising and Kevin Dier as business operations manager.

  • Air Quality Sciences, Inc. (Atlanta, GA) appointed Anthony Worthan to the position of president and coo.
  • Gary Weber was appointed director of OCG sales & marketing for siemens building Technologies, Inc. (Buffalo Grove, IL).
  • C.D. Young has been named manager of Noland Co.'s (Newport News, VA), two Newport News complex, consisting of two branches.
