Lawmaker Joins HVAC Discussion in Visit to Distributor

SITE VISIT: U.S. Rep. Nick LaLota (third from right), a Republican from Long Island, New York, recently visited the MCN Distributors location in Riverhead, New York.
RIVERHEAD, N.Y. — U.S. Rep. Nick LaLota, R-N.Y., visited the Riverhead, New York, branch of MCN Distributors on November 6 and met with local HVAC industry leaders to discuss practical energy solutions, workforce challenges, and community engagement efforts.
LaLota joined MCN’s leadership team, as well as guest contractor Edward Karnbach of ECE Air Inc., for a tour of the MCN warehouse and a conversation on issues impacting Long Island’s HVAC sector, according to a press release from Heating, Air-conditioning & Refrigeration Distributors International (HARDI).
The discussion centered on the HVAC industry’s role in advancing high-efficiency technology such as heat pumps to reduce emissions and lower energy costs for homeowners and businesses. LaLota expressed interest in how companies like Rheem Manufacturing Co. are helping scale these technologies in practical, affordable ways, the press release said.
MCN representatives emphasized the importance of closing the skills and tuition gaps in the trades by expanding partnerships with local institutions. The group also discussed strategies for growing apprenticeship and certification programs that prepare students for rewarding careers in HVAC and related fields.
LaLota expressed enthusiasm for MCN’s upcoming partnership with the New York Islanders. The partnership will focus on sustainability and protecting Long Island’s beaches. He also indicated interest in reforming the Energy Policy and Conservation Act by tying energy-efficiency increases to economic benefits, the press release said.
“Congressman LaLota was engaged and genuinely interested in understanding how our industry supports contractors, employees, and the local community,” said Jason Kwasna, regional manager of Rheem Northeast Distribution. “We made the most of the opportunity to connect policymakers with the people and businesses driving innovation and sustainability in HVAC.”
The visit follows HARDI’s Congressional Fly-In, held in May, during which representatives from MCN and other companies in the industry met with lawmakers in Washington, D.C., to advocate for policies that strengthen HVACR distributors, contractors, and the skilled trades workforce.
