The rollout of A2L refrigerants like R-454B has been bumpy, with shortages creating delays and frustration for HVAC contractors trying to comply with AIM Act requirements. While R-32 and R-454B have significantly lower global warming potential (GWP) compared to R-410A, many experts see them as transitional solutions as climate policies push for deeper emissions reductions. In response, refrigerant and equipment manufacturers including Arkema, Chemours, and Carrier are already researching the next generation of ultra-low-GWP options. Their efforts focus on balancing environmental impact, safety, performance, and manufacturability, while working within existing A1 and A2L classifications.
