Refrigerant Shortage: Key Insights for HVACR Contractors
An HVAC Minute Video Update: July 8, 2025
There are a few key things contractors need to know about the refrigerant shortage. For starters: as the industry transitions from R-410A, many manufacturers chose R-454B for its similar performance and easier rollout. But that choice has created a major supply-demand mismatch. And while R-32 was slowly introduced across re-engineered product lines, R-454B equipment hit the market all at once, spiking demand for the gas itself. That surge has strained the supply chain, especially when it comes to cylinders. As a result, manufacturers are ramping up production and distribution, and they say relief is already on the way. But the shortage has now shifted downstream — to warehouses, counters, and service vans. Over-ordering by contractors, worried they won’t have enough, is further clouding the supply picture. So what can contractors do? Industry leaders advise focusing on repair when possible, staying in close contact with distributors, and avoiding risky workarounds like refrigerant mixing or unofficial conversion kits.
