The air-to-water units complement the company’s renewable energy solutions for homes

IKEA recently announced that it is partnering with Svea Solar to offer air-to-water heat pumps to customers in Germany. With these new heat pumps, IKEA contends that customers can actively contribute to climate protection while significantly reducing their energy costs.

"Sustainable living should be accessible to the masses," said Jacqueline Polak of IKEA Germany. "That's why we at IKEA are making renewable energy solutions like heat pumps affordable for the masses."

The heat pumps complement IKEA’s existing portfolio of renewable energy solutions for the home, which already includes photovoltaic systems, energy storage systems, and charging stations for electric vehicles. In this way, IKEA is driving the energy and mobility transition for its customers at home.

New Offering

The new air-to-water heat pumps from partner Svea Solar use ambient air to generate heat and hot water. "Heating with heat pumps is independent and can reduce your CO2 emissions by up to three-quarters," said Taner Karacan, managing director of Svea Solar Germany. "We are delighted to announce a new milestone in our successful collaboration with IKEA and to be working with IKEA to further advance the energy transition in people's homes."

According to Svea Solar, the installation of the air-to-water heat pump is straightforward, both in new buildings and many existing ones. In some cases, only minor adjustments to the existing heating system are needed. The company added that even in freezing temperatures, the heat pump operates reliably, quietly, and with minimal maintenance.

The heat pumps come from the European manufacturer Aira and offer the following benefits:

  • Whisper-quiet operation, with only 40 to 48 dB, about as loud as a modern refrigerator;
  • High performance even in winter, with reliable operation down to -25°C (-13°F);
  • Natural refrigerant R-290 (propane); and
  • Highest energy efficiency class for maximum savings.

The indoor unit works in conjunction with the outdoor unit to heat the home efficiently and provide hot water. Customers can choose from two heat pump options: the All-in-One indoor unit or the Compact Variant with additional hot water storage. An app helps end users easily control their heating and hot water via a smartphone and includes an overview of energy consumption, monthly heating costs, and the CO₂ emissions saved compared to the customer’s old heating system.

IKEA's new offering also includes comprehensive, free expert advice. After an individual needs assessment, customers receive a binding, fixed-price quote. Installation, maintenance, and repair are included, as is a product and performance guarantee of up to 15 years, depending on the model chosen.

IKEA is not yet offering these heat pumps in the U.S.
