National BIM Guide for Owners Available for Public Review
Comments are due by Oct. 31, 2016
WASHINGTON — The National Institute of Building Sciences has completed development of a new guideline to help building owners and their design teams utilize building information modeling (BIM). The National BIM Guide for Owners (NBGO) draft is now available for public review and comment until Oct. 31.
Responding to the industrywide need for increasingly savvy and project-involved building owners, the National Institute of Building Sciences, with the support of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), ASHRAE, Building Owners and Managers Association International (BOMA), and International Facility Management Association (IFMA), compiled a carefully balanced, integrated team that has worked for the past year to craft the first NBGO. The NBGO defines an approach to creating and fulfilling BIM requirements from the owner’s standpoint. The guide builds on the premise that BIM, in and of itself, is not the end but rather the means to a number of potentially valuable project delivery outcomes for the owner.
The 36-page NBGO offers a toolset addressing three broad areas the owner should understand in order to work effectively with the project’s BIM team: process, infrastructure and standards, and execution.
“As BIM adoption in the United States continues to rise, the building owner stands to benefit most by implementing BIM as a tool to maximize a building’s revenue stream throughout its life cycle,” said Institute President Henry L. Green, Hon. AIA. “BIM has the potential to facilitate better-informed owner decision-making, design-intent communication, project coordination across various phases, and many other benefits, including increased property resale values of the building, as well as leasing revenues.”
The NBGO is slated for debut during Building Innovation 2017: The National Institute of Building Sciences Annual Conference and Expo, Jan. 9-12, 2017, in Washington, District of Columbia.
The current draft of the National BIM Guide for Owners is available for download on the National Institute of Building Sciences website at https://www.nibs.org/?nbgo. Industry stakeholders are asked to download the Excel worksheet provided on the web page, fill in your comments, and email your completed sheet by Oct. 31 to Stephanie Stubbs at sstubbs@nibs.org.
