Johnson Controls Offers Chiller Platforms Compatible with Low-GWP Refrigerants
Alternative to R-134a provides 56 percent lower GWP and comparable performance
SINGAPORE — Johnson Controls announced it is enhancing its HFC product lines to be fully compatible with the non-flammable, low-global warming potential (GWP) refrigerant Opteon™ XP10 (R-513A) manufactured by The Chemours Co. York centrifugal and screw chillers ranging from 125 to 6,000 tons (440 to 21,100 kW) are compatible with R-513A.
“Our customers can have peace of mind when specifying or purchasing current R-134a-based product offerings, knowing their purchase will provide the full economic benefit, regardless of any potential HFC regulations during the life span of their equipment,” said Laura Wand, vice president, Building Efficiency global chiller business, Johnson Controls. “We always choose refrigerants that will best meet the needs of our customers and the environment based on safety, efficiency, reliability, availability, and cost.
“Just as we addressed ozone depletion years ago, specifically with regard to CFCs and HCFCs, we discontinued the use of R-123-based products to avoid potential obsolescence of equipment in the later stages of equipment lifetime,” said Wand. “We are always thinking and planning decades ahead, so our customers don’t have to worry about it. Our chillers are ready for the future.”
Chemours’ Opteon XP10 (R-513A) is a non-flammable (A1) azeotropic alternative to R-134a, providing 56 percent lower GWP and comparable performance. XP10 was commercialized as part of a broad portfolio of Opteon refrigerants, providing a line of low-GWP solutions developed to help meet the current and proposed HFC regulations while maintaining or improving performance compared to incumbent products.
