Aug. 7, 2009: Emerson Unit Completes Design of New Energy-Efficient Corporate Data Center
ST. LOUIS - Emerson Climate Technologies, a business of Emerson, announced that its Clive Samuels and Associates unit completed the design work for Emerson’s new 35,000-square-foot corporate data center, located at the company’s St. Louis headquarters. Clive Samuels and Associates collaborated with the architectural designer, Fox Architects, to provide the facility’s mechanical and electrical infrastructure. The new facility features state-of-the-art HVAC, plumbing, lighting, building power, and fire protection systems that meet Emerson’s business needs and incorporate Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) principles for sustainability and building efficiency.
The facility is being evaluated by the U.S. Green Building Council against its LEED Gold requirements for certification, which will make it one of only a handful of Gold-certified data centers in the country. The expected LEED certification is a result of the facility’s cutting-edge design and efficient technology infrastructure, making the data center 31 percent more energy efficient than traditional data centers, said Emerson.

Clive Samuels and Associates designed the facility’s mechanical and electrical infrastructure with a number of environmentally sustainable attributes. To enhance the efficiency of the HVAC systems, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was run to simulate space loads within the data center, and cooling equipment was located to ensure optimal system performance. The data center’s lighting control system, which accounts for both artificial lighting inside the facility and daylight available outside the facility, dims the data center’s artificial lights when sufficient natural light is available, reducing the facility’s electricity consumption.
Designed to meet TIA-Standard 942 Tier III reliability, which allows 99.982 percent uptime, the data center’s power system is also equipped with tiers of redundancy, dual utility feeds, redundant UPS protection scalable to 4,050 kW across dual paths, and onsite generation to meet the facility’s highest demands without sacrificing efficiency. The building’s systems also include the largest solar array in Missouri, which is capable of providing 100 kW of power.
The data center integrates numerous Emerson technologies and services, including brands such as Alber, Aperture, ASCO, Copeland, Knurr, and Liebert, in addition to technologies from several of the world’s leading IT companies.
