The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) announced the recipients of 16 scholarships totaling $85,000 for the 2008-09 academic year. The students are all pursuing courses leading to a career within the industry.
Rheem Heating & Cooling recently introduced its Total Access Training. This new, online multimedia training component includes several pre-existing courses for contractors and technicians that address seasonal climate issues and environmentally friendly solutions.
The Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA), partnering with USA Refrigerants, launched a new program to help its contractor members recycle refrigerants while recouping some of their costs. The ACCA/USA Refrigerants “R-22 Buyback Program” is designed for the cost-conscious and forward-thinking mechanical contractor.
Robert K. Asdal, executive director of the Hydraulic Institute (HI), announced that four firms were added as Standards Partners. The Standards Partner program provides an opportunity for engineering consultants and pump users to partner with HI members in the development of pump standards and education efforts.
The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) is currently accepting public input on more than 35 proposed addenda to standards, as well as a proposal to withdraw Standard 52.1. Addenda to various standards are open for review, as are seven standards and one guideline.
The Air Movement and Control Association International (AMCA) Inc.’s board of directors approved a new category called “Associates.” This category will be extended to manufacturers, businesses, and companies that are involved in supplying components, products, and services to the HVACR industry.
The International Ground Source Heat Pump Association’s (IGSHPA’s) CLGS software has been the industry standard for loop sizing for over 20 years. The DOS-based software, however, has become more difficult to use on new computer operating systems. Enertech has agreed to provide an updated version of CLGS at no cost to IGSHPA.
The Hampton Roads Chapter of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers, (ASHRAE) paired with Old Dominion University’s (ODU’s) Engineering Department, Norfolk, Va., to create the “Gordon Webster Zipperer III Endowed Scholarship in Engineering.”

In the wake of Hurricane Ike, the Air Conditioning Contractors of America’s (ACCA’s) Disaster Relief Committee has been moving to determine the best way to help its members in need in the affected areas. The association decided to issue emergency funds to members in the devastated areas and is seeking further help from ACCA members.
