United States shipments of central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps totaled 673,360 units in April 2015, up 3.8 percent from 648,404 units shipped in April 2014, according to the latest statistics from the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI).

PowerWise has announced the availability of new smartphone and web controls for mini-split heat pump systems. Mini-split users can now control temperature settings online, as part of an energy management dashboard. Users can set up to eight heating and cooling periods.

More often than not, homeowners are finding the new crop of heat pumps — boasting greater comfort levels and higher efficiencies — to be an attractive option.

Backup heat can be expensive to use, which is why it’s important to find the right temperature — the balance point — at which compressor operation stops and supplemental heat is activated. 

Even though these systems can cost significantly more than non-inverter ASHPs, manufacturers note their higher price tags are more than offset by significantly higher efficiencies.

While it’s true geothermal heat pumps do offer excellent opportunities in combination with low-temperature hydronic distribution systems, they are not the only viable way to combine the heat-leveraging ability of heat pumps with the unsurpassed comfort offered by modern hydronic distribution systems.
