Market Warms to Chilled Beams

For many years, chilled beam systems have provided space conditioning to buildings throughout Europe and Australia, but the technology has been slow to catch on in the United States. Refrigeration technicians carry refrigerant in non-refillable cylinders on their service vehicles every day. While these cylinders are considered relatively safe, there are some hazards associated with transportation and storage, and when removing refrigerant. Mishandling or improper use can lead to injury and/or property damage.

The Professor: Frost on the Compressor's Head

Many service technicians believe that if there is frost on the compressor’s head, there is cause for alarm. This is simply not true. Frost is simply frozen dew. Consider a low temperature commercial refrigeration application operating with 7° of evaporator superheat and 40° of compressor superheat.

Recent Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announcements regarding refrigeration have noted a gold level award in Texas and what was being called “an environmental milestone” in Pennsylvania. Both involve supermarkets and the EPA’s GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership.

Chinese Drywall Plaintiffs Get $2.6 Million

April 26, 2010
On April 8, Judge Eldon E. Fallon of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana awarded seven Virginia plaintiffs $2.6 million for damage to their property, personal property, compensatory damages, and the loss of the use and enjoyment of their homes, due to imported drywall from China, against defendant Taishan Gypsum.

Construction Limps Along

Only 10 out of 337 metropolitan areas added construction jobs between February 2009 and 2010, the Associated General Contractors of America recently reported, citing data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Even worse, 230 metro areas experienced double digit declines in construction employment while only two cities experienced a double digit increase, association officials noted.

The Marian Center provides educational, residential, clinical, vocational, and recreational services to more than 150 students and adults ranging in age from birth to middle adulthood. Operated in seven buildings, and officially opened in 1964, the central a/c system at the center’s 10,000-square-foot school building was overdue for replacement.

After purchasing four, East 62nd Street buildings, Realty Corp. of New York was in the market to restore and conserve the structures and use them as high-end, rental apartments. Old buildings can be difficult to heat and cool, and with attention being paid to historic detail, finding an HVAC solution can be a daunting task.
