J1708 Vehicle Diagnostics service gives fleet managers and dispatchers remote access to vehicle diagnostic information. Information provided by the service includes engine diagnostics and fault descriptions to maximize vehicle warranty and pinpoint malfunctions. According to the company, the system separates driving fuel from idle fuel data to reduce state fuel taxes. It also provides driver behavior data, which can be used to improve driver and public safety and to help lower insurance rates. The Vehicle Diagnostics service uses an in-vehicle J1708 connector, data translator, and a serial connection to the company's iLM® (Internet Location Manager). Engine performance and driver behavior data is collected from a vehicle's electronic control module.
