BOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The ETL Semko division of Intertek Testing Services has developed a new program for manufacturers who want to verify the energy and cooling performance attributes of portable air conditioners.

ETL Semko’s portable air conditioner verification program calls for the testing of these units to validate manufacturers’ claimed ratings for cooling capacity, power input, and cooling efficiency, referenced in Standard 128 of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). Intertek Testing Services believes that the verification program will assist consumers in selecting the appropriate unit for their air conditioning needs.

Manufacturers whose appliances meet the requirements of the program can have their models listed in the ETL Semko directory of ETL Verified Portable Spot Air Conditioners. According to ETL Semko, a test model must achieve a cooling efficiency ratio (CER) of at least 6.5 to become eligible for ETL verification.
