Sheet Metal and A/C Industry Taking Steps to Enhance the Expertise of Building Inspectors
The Arizona chapter of the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association (SMACNA), the Phoenix Sheet Metal Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC), and Sheet Metal Workers International Association (SMWIA), Local 359, in cooperation with the International Training Institute for the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Industry, are working together to provide instruction on various topics specifically related to the industry.
The organizations recently sponsored a course attended by two dozen building inspectors, who gained insight into identifying approved procedures for fabricating and installing heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems.
The coursework focused on helping instructors recognize the importance of establishing methods of inspecting hvac components. Proper inspection is critical to safety, health, and comfort of the general public and serves as an acknowledgement that quality workmanship is essential in terms of operation and maintenance of hvac systems.
Carol Goguen, executive director of SMACNA-Arizona, said it is extremely important for inspectors and quality control personnel to be informed and periodically updated on technological innovations and installation procedures taking place in the sheet metal, heating, and air conditioning industry.
“Ultimately, the inspectors are providing the assurance that such works are in compliance with established codes and standards,” said Goguen. “And, in doing so, serve as the consumers’ protector in terms of value and quality workmanship.”
