ASHRAE President Stresses Teamwork in Inaugural Speech

TERM BEGINS: Sarah E. Maston took over as ASHRAE president during the society's 2026 annual conference in Austin, Texas.
ATLANTA — Sarah E. Maston is the new president of ASHRAE, installed during the society’s recent annual conference in Austin, Texas. ASHRAE also welcomed newly elected officers and directors.
In her first address as president, Maston introduced the theme for her year-long term: “Changing the Game: Retrofitting for Resilience.” The theme focuses on how the building industry can work together to develop a winning game plan to improve the efficiency, performance, and resilience of existing buildings in the face of growing climate and infrastructure challenges, an ASHRAE press release said.
“ASHRAE has been providing leadership and guidance in energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and carbon emissions reduction,” said Maston. “So, where do we go from here?”
During her term, Maston said, ASHRAE will focus on three key areas:
• Increasing awareness of the importance of building codes, and their role in resilience;
• The importance of cross-functional teams and creating a game plan to improve building operations;
• The gamification of education, in order to continue attracting talent to tackle the dilemmas ASHRAE faces
“There is no one-size-fits-all solution or game plan for retrofitting buildings,” Maston said, “Every building has its own constraints. That’s why teamwork is absolutely essential.”
Maston is the director of commissioning and energy services at Colliers Project Leaders. Her team directs the commissioning process for municipal, educational, healthcare, and laboratory projects across New England.
