HVAC Trends: Smart Thermostats
Thermostats are becoming a gateway to broader smart home services
Smart thermostats are increasingly becoming a gateway to broader connected-home services — and a potential business opportunity for HVAC contractors. According to Scott Harkins, senior vice president of global sales at Resideo, new thermostat platforms are being designed not only to control comfort, but also to help contractors stay connected with customers after the installation. Features such as contractor branding, installation support tools, and remote diagnostics can help streamline installs and maintain ongoing engagement with homeowners. In some cases, connected platforms can also alert contractors to potential service needs before they become major issues. As homeowners build smart homes using platforms like Apple, Google, and Amazon, contractors who install devices that integrate across ecosystems may be better positioned to remain involved as additional connected products — from water monitoring to indoor air quality — are added to the home.
