From HVAC Contractor to Senator to Secretary of Homeland Security
An HVAC Minute Video Update: March 17, 2026
An HVAC contractor turned U.S. senator could soon be heading one of the most powerful departments in the federal government. Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma has been nominated by President Donald Trump to serve as the next Secretary of Homeland Security. Before entering politics, Mullin ran a family plumbing and home service business that expanded into HVAC and became one of the largest service companies in the region. That industry background has made him a familiar name in HVAC circles. Mullin has worked closely with ACCA and has even received the association’s “Coolest in Congress” award. Since his election to the House of Representatives in 2012, ACCA says Mullin has been a strong voice for the HVAC industry and a longtime ally to contractors. He represented Oklahoma’s 2nd congressional district for a decade before winning a U.S. Senate seat in 2022, and if confirmed, he’s set to become Secretary of Homeland Security on March 31, 2026.
