Electrification Laws Are Changing the HVAC Playbook
An HVAC Minute Video Update: March 5, 2026
Whether due to sustainability goals or rising energy costs — electrification laws are gaining momentum across the country. Case in point: Colorado now restricts new residential gas furnaces and water heaters. Options are now limited to either ultra-low nitrogen oxides emissions or those in compliance with the latest Energy Star standards. And it may not stop there. Chris Czarnecki, ACCA director of government relations and advocacy said that Colorado’s mandate may become a model for other states, especially those already pursuing aggressive electrification and decarbonization goals. Incentive programs are also expanding. While federal tax credits have tightened, many states are boosting rebates for heat pumps and high-efficiency electric systems. Industry experts say contractors who understand and leverage these programs can turn policy shifts into real business opportunities. But resistance remains. Twenty-six states have passed fuel-choice laws protecting access to natural gas, and some proposed zero-emission rules have already been rejected. All in all, whether through mandates or incentives, electrification is accelerating. Contractors who invest in training, understand rebate programs, and expand their equipment offerings will be best positioned to navigate — and profit from — the transition.
