Shipments in the U.S of central a/c units and air-source heat pumps continued a freefall in October, relative to the same month in 2024, and shipments of gas and oil furnaces were also down in year-over-year comparisons, according to the latest figures from the Air-Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Institute (AHRI).

October shipments of both gas and electric residential storage water heaters also dropped in comparison to October 2024 shipments, the AHRI numbers show.

October was the fifth consecutive month in which both a/c and heat pump shipments were below what they were during those same months in 2024. Year-to-date numbers show a combined 6,961,815 shipments of air-source heat pumps and central a/c units through October, more than 1.49 million units, or about 17.7%, below the 8,455,008 shipped during the first 10 months of last year.

There were 209,883 air-source heat pumps shipped in October, a decrease of 42.6% compared to the 365,388 shipped in October 2024. Year-to-date heat pump shipments were at 3,226,820, a nearly 10% drop compared to the first 10 months of 2024, during which 3,581,109 units were shipped.

October shipments of central a/c units totaled 202,990, a nearly 55% drop compared to the number, 449,972, shipped during October 2024. Year-to-date central a/c shipments were at 3,734,995 through October, a falloff of 23.4%, or more than 1.1 million units, compared to the total 4,873,899 shipped during the first 10 months of 2024.

There were 244,324 gas furnace shipments in October, a decrease of 13% compared to October 2024, during which 280,747 were shipped. Shipments of oil furnaces in October totaled 3,638 units, a decrease of 16.8%, compared to the 4,375 shipped in October 2024.

Furnace shipments during the first 10 months of the year, however, were up in year-over-year comparisons. There were 2,741,551 gas furnaces shipped through October, a 5.7% increase over the number, 2,592,961, that were shipped during the same period in 2024. Oil furnace shipments through October totaled 25,542, an increase of 6.3% compared to the first 10 months of last year, during which 24,028 were shipped.
