Carrier Collaborates with the American Lung Association to Support Healthy Indoor Environments in Schools
Carrier donated products and services for a study focused on indoor air quality at Lakes International Language Academy in Forest Lake, Minnesota.
As part of its commitment to champion healthy indoor environments, Carrier has teamed up with the American Lung Association to support indoor air quality (IAQ) research in schools through the development of a case study on IAQ and its impact on student well-being. The Lung Association is a national nonprofit committed to improving respiratory health through education and research.
The Data-Driven Indoor Air Quality in Schools Study was conducted at Lakes International Language Academy (LILA), an International Baccalaureate World School serving pre-K through 12th-grade students in Forest Lake, Minnesota. The study highlights the correlation between IAQ, student health and academic performance. According to the Lung Association, unhealthy air conditions have been proven to increase airborne illnesses, initiate frequent asthma attacks and hinder academic success.

In addition to supporting the IAQ research, Carrier donated products and services, including 137 air quality sensors, 70 cellular hubs, sensor installation and an HVAC assessment. The school also received one year of access to Carrier Abound, an open digital platform that connects with equipment or hardware and provides real-time metrics to help determine whether a building is healthy and sustainable.
With assistance from Carrier’s solutions, researchers were able to identify several actionable interventions that may help improve the school’s IAQ. By prioritizing regular HVAC maintenance, monitoring systems and adjusting HVAC schedules during peak hours, administrators can make informed, timely decisions to support student health. Findings from this research equip schools, such as LILA, with the tools to create IAQ Management Plans to sustain high air quality standards.
