Geothermal HVAC may be a long-term solution, but for many contractors, getting a project off the ground — literally — remains a major challenge. A new study shows that more than half of HVAC contractors who outsource their geothermal drilling say finding a qualified driller isn’t easy. Why? It comes down to economics. Drillers are in short supply, and those in the field often prioritize more lucrative jobs, like water wells, that offer recurring service opportunities. Geothermal projects, by contrast, are high-effort, low-repeat — making them a tough sell. Compounding the issue: labor shortages, tight margins, and costly equipment. Many HVAC contractors simply can’t offer drillers enough incentive — or don’t feel confident pricing jobs profitably. Industry veterans suggest a solution: partnership.
