R-454B Prices Hike as HVACR Industry Prepares for High Summer Demand
An HVAC Minute Video Update: May 7, 2025
If you haven’t heard already, you might want to brace yourself: Honeywell has announced a 42% surcharge on R-454B refrigerant. The company cites rising raw material costs, unprecedented demand, and new tariffs as the reasons behind the sharp increase. This follows two earlier price hikes — 15% in February and another 8% in March. Supply issues are already squeezing the market, with long lead times and limited cylinder availability leaving contractors scrambling. Now, with summer right around the corner, the combination of higher prices and product shortages is creating serious challenges for the HVACR industry. Honeywell says it will source more R-454B from international markets to bridge the gap — but a move that will place itself at the hands of additional tariff costs. Contractors across social media are voicing frustration, with some paying over $500 a cylinder — if they can even find one. Many supply houses are reportedly limiting sales to customers who purchase complete HVAC systems. With little relief expected before summer, the industry is facing a difficult season ahead — where securing refrigerant might be as challenging as battling the heat itself.
