Heat Pumps Power Ahead
An HVAC Minute Video Update: April 23, 2025
A recent survey commissioned by Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC U.S. (METUS) reveals a significant increase in U.S. homeowner awareness and adoption of heat pumps. In other words, the people are pumped for heat pumps. Conducted in fall 2024, the survey found that 32% of respondents reported a good understanding of heat pumps, up from 23% in 2023. Additionally, 37% of homeowners indicated they have a heat pump in their residence, with the highest adoption rates in the Northeast (54%) and West (49%). Notably, 90% of those with heat pumps expressed willingness to recommend them to others. The survey also highlighted the influential role of HVAC contractors in the decision-making process, with 82% of respondents acknowledging their impact. This aligns with data from the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI), which indicates that heat pump sales have surpassed those of gas furnaces in the U.S. since 2022. The survey's findings suggest a growing trend toward heat pump adoption, driven by increased awareness and the pivotal role of HVAC professionals in guiding homeowners through the transition to more energy-efficient heating and cooling solutions.
