HOUSTON — Goodman Manufacturing will be the first heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) manufacturer to launch Emerson’s new Copeland Scroll™ two-stage compressor that’s designed to provide budget-minded homeowners high-energy efficiencies with enhanced indoor comfort at an affordable, mid-tier price, the companies have announced.

“Goodman is very excited to be the first to introduce the next generation Copeland Scroll two-stage compressor in our 16- and 18-SEER product lineup,” said Lawrence M. Blackburn, president, Goodman Business Unit. “We think dealers and homeowners will like the enhanced comfort these two-stage systems deliver over fixed-capacity systems – at a refreshingly affordable price, too.”

Homeowners faced with budget constraints often purchase minimum 13- and 14-SEER, fixed-capacity systems. Alternatively, while higher SEER fixed-capacity systems offer energy savings over minimum-SEER systems, they may not provide the additional indoor comfort benefits that modulating compressor technology offers.

“We’re offering our HVAC dealers a practical solution that meets growing demand for high-energy efficiency in more affordable 16- and 18-SEER systems, while delivering some of the enhanced indoor comfort homeowners desire,” added Blackburn.

A survey conducted by Emerson found that 56 percent of homeowners said they want comfort and energy benefits, but only 22 percent buy products that provide those benefits. “Too expensive” and “can’t afford” were the top two reasons homeowners gave for not purchasing a high efficiency HVAC system.

The next-gen Copeland Scroll technology modulates between two stages of capacity, either 65 percent or 100 percent. Two internal bypass ports enable the compressor to run at part-load capacity when outdoor temperatures require only part-load cooling. When temperatures and thus demand increase, the bypass ports are sealed, instantly shifting capacity back to 100 percent. The result is a system able to control temperature and humidity more precisely than traditional fixed-capacity systems.

Goodman products featuring the new compressor will be available in June 2017.
