ARLINGTON, Va. — According to the Air Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI), year-to-date combined shipments of central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps increased 9 percent, to 4,760,730 units, up from 4,368,522 units shipped in Aug. 2012. Year-to-date shipments of central air conditioners increased 6.1 percent, to 3,280,528 units, up from 3,092,220 units shipped during the same period in 2012. The year-to-date total for heat pump shipments increased 16 percent, to 1,480,202 units, up from 1,276,302 units shipped during the same period in 2012.

United States shipments of central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps totaled 500,813 units in Aug. 2013, down 2.9 percent from 515,530 units shipped in Aug. 2012. U.S. shipments of air conditioners decreased 5.7 percent, to 347,718 units, down from 368,650 units shipped in Aug. 2012. U.S. shipments of air-source heat pumps increased 4.2 percent, to 153,095 units, up from 146,880 units shipped in Aug. 2012. 

Warm Air Furnaces
Year-to-date United States shipments of gas warm air furnaces increased 19.3 percent, to 1,583,426 units, compared with 1,327,733 units shipped during the same period in 2012. Year-to-date United States shipments of oil warm air furnaces decreased 9.6 percent to 15,983, compared with 17,679 units shipped during the same period in 2012.

United States shipments of gas warm air furnaces for Aug. 2013 increased 3 percent, to 215,129 units, up from 208,861 units shipped in Aug. 2012. Oil warm air furnace shipments decreased 22.9 percent, to 2,603 units in Aug. 2013, down from 3,375 units shipped in Aug.2012.
