Project Files: NYC Hotel Under New (Energy) ManagementCompany: Telkonet Inc.

Customer: Crowne Plaza Times Square (New York City)

Installation: EcoWave Remote Wireless Thermostat Package, which includes EcoSource HVAC controllers and EcoAir wireless thermostat; EcoContact wireless door contacts; and EcoCentral Virtual Engineer cloud-based remote command center.

Completion: January 2011

Objective: To maintain upscale guest experience and comfort while reducing energy consumption and preventing unscheduled HVAC repairs.

Work Completed: After a successful trial run, the hotel installed the EcoSmart Intelligent Energy Management System throughout all 795 guestrooms. The Crowne Plaza replaced existing thermostats with Telkonet’s ZigBee-enabled EcoWave thermostat package, which includes an EcoAir display thermostat and an EcoSource HVAC control unit. The EcoAir and EcoSource communicate wirelessly, allowing for flexibility in selecting the location of the thermostat and easy installation. To enable remote monitoring and control of the HVAC system in each guestroom at the Crowne Plaza, the EcoWave thermostats created a robust property-wide network with the cloud-based EcoCentral Virtual Engineer command center to aggregate and process room-by-room data. The information assists facility managers in dispatching maintenance personnel effectively to respond remotely to temperature change requests. To help prevent unscheduled emergency repairs, EcoCentral Virtual Engineer informs on-site staff of HVAC systems that may not be functioning optimally, allowing for proactive maintenance. The installation reduced HVAC equipment runtime by 24 percent and saves the hotel more than $112,000 per year in energy costs.

Quote: “As our understanding of the technology evolved, we discovered that EcoSmart exceeded our expectations for what might be accomplished through remote monitoring. I rely on EcoCentral Virtual Engineer to help me troubleshoot what’s happening behind a closed door. EcoSmart thermostats and the EcoCentral Virtual Engineer allow me to quickly and efficiently resolve HVAC issues.” - Vincent Curcio, director of engineering, Crowne Plaza Times Square
