More Products That Save the HVAC Way

October 10, 2011
Saving energy saves dollars. Continuing the theme of the feature story “Saving the Day the HVAC Way” in this issue, here are a few more products that offer end users energy efficiency savings.

Amana
www.amana-hac.com
The Amana® AMVM96 modulating gas furnace, with its self-calibrating, modulating gas valve and variable-speed blower, delivers precise heating performance, circulating air throughout the home, offering up to 96 percent AFUE. Amana’s modulating gas valve operates on a two-stage or single-stage thermostat and is compatible with the ComfortNet™ communications system. Its Million-Air® stainless-steel, tubular heat exchanger has withstood more than 2 million consecutive test firings. The furnace features a SureStart® silicon nitride igniter and a quiet variable-speed ECM circulation motor that gently ramps up or down according to demand.

Certainteed
www.certainteed.com
The ToughGardT from CertainTeed is an acoustical liner for HVAC sheet metal ducts, improving the energy efficiency of a HVAC system by reducing heat gain or loss and minimizing moisture problems due to condensation. The liner includes 75 percent recycled content. Featuring a black fiberglass mat and composed primarily of long, textile-type glass fibers, ToughGardT Textile Duct Liner is said to be durable, abuse-resistant, and easy-to-clean. Moisture that enters a duct system insulated with the liner beads up and stays beaded, allowing airflow to evaporate the moisture before it can be absorbed into the liner. It is GREENGUARD® certified and contains an EPA registered antimicrobial agent to ward off potential mold and microbial growth. The duct liner is also designed to meet specifications for acoustical and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified projects and the National Association of Home Builders’ Green Building Guidelines with its recycled content and other sustainable features.

Coleman
www.coleman.com
The Coleman® Echelon™ CP9C 98 percent AFUE modulating gas furnace is for applications with limited space, standing 33 inches tall. Integrated controls provide comfort to within 1/2 degree of the thermostat setpoint, ensuring precise modulation of the gas valve, from 35 to 100 percent in 100 increments. Features include self-diagnostic controls with fault codes as well as slide-out blower assembly for service access. It also features an insulated blower compartment for thermal and acoustic performance, as well as an electronically commutated motor for quiet operation — as low as 47 dB. This variable-speed model features an ECM fan motor option which circulates air for longer periods. Longer run times mean fewer hot and cold spots and longer periods of air filtering, resulting in cleaner and more comfortable air. In addition, external air filters are used for maximum flexibility in meeting customers’ IAQ needs.

Energy Concepts
www.energy-concepts.com/helisorber
Energy Concepts Company announces a solar thermal chiller/heat pump product — the “Helisorber,” which the company said more than doubles the useful output from a solar thermal collector. For example, supplying 100 kW of thermal heat from a collector to the Helisorber will yield 75 kW of 7°C chilling plus 175 kW of hot water heating to 60°C. The California Energy Innovation Small Grant Program funded development of the initial Helisorber prototype. That unit produces 87 kW (25 tons) of chilling and 215 kW of water heating from 130 kW thermal fluid heat input, according to the company. The design has been optimized and scaled to refrigeration capacities from 10 to 200 tons (35 to 700 kW). The chilling and heat pumping are produced simultaneously, so both must be used, stored, or lost, the company said. It added that the driving temperature must be 125°C or higher.

Grundfos
www.grundfos.us
The MAGNA variable-speed wet rotor circulator from Grundfos is, according to the company, powerful, reliable, intelligent, and energy efficient. The MAGNA has a permanent magnet motor design to reduce power consumption by 50 percent or more, the company said. The patented AUTOADAPT™ feature controls pump performance automatically within defined performance range to ensure lowest possible energy consumption without sacrificing comfort. It can be used for replacement applications.

Luxaire
www.joinluxaire.com
The Luxaire Acclimate LP9C 98 percent modulating gas furnace is 33 inches tall. Integrated controls provide comfort to within 1/2 degree of the thermostat setpoint, ensuring precise modulation of the gas valve, from 35 to 100 percent in 100 increments. Warranties include a lifetime limited warranty on both heat exchangers to the original purchaser; a 20-year limited warranty from original installation date to subsequent purchaser; standard five-year limited parts warranty; and an extended 10-year limited parts warranty when the product is registered online within 90 days of purchase for replacement or closing for new home construction.
