WASHINGTON, DC — According to estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau, privately-owned housing units authorized by building permits were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,653,000 for December. This is a 4% increase over the revised November rate of 1,595,000, and 6% above the December 2000 rate of 1,553,000.
Single-family housing permits in December were at a rate of 1,249,000, which is a 3% increase over the revised November figure of 1,211,000.
An estimated 1,612,100 housing units were authorized by building permits in 2001. This is 1% above the 1,592,300 for year 2000.
