As the Department of the Navy continues its emphasis on energy security, the Office of Naval Research (ONR) announced that it is increasing its support for Energy Excelerator, a Hawaii-based program that funds development of alternative energy ideas.

Presenters and posters are being sought for ASHRAE’s High Performance Buildings Conference, which is scheduled for April 7-8, 2014, at Hyatt Fisherman’s Wharf, San Francisco.

Two Winsupply and a Winwater Works are the latest locations opened by WinWholesale, making a total of 10 to date in 2013. The openings are Canandaigua Winsupply in Canandaigua, N.Y., Hoosier Winsupply in Bloomington, Ind., and Meriden Winwater Works in Meriden, Conn.

Currently valued at $1.5 billion, but with only 1.5 to 2.5 percent penetration in most states, the home energy management systems (HEMS) market is poised for significant growth, according to a report by GTM Research. The firm forecasts that the U.S. HEMS market will be worth over $4 billion by 2017.

SmartWatt Energy, an energy efficiency firm, has added staff across two divisions nationwide. Kerry Stinson, P.E., was hired as an energy engineer III. Benjamin Prichett was hired as a project engineer. Vincent Figueroa was hired as an IT technician.

Thirty community college leaders and Siemens Industry Inc. are convening for a national event to promote campus living laboratories. Living laboratories are green and building system installations (e.g., solar panels, energy monitoring, etc.) that reduce colleges’ carbon footprints while serving as learning opportunities for students.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Georgetown University have signed an agreement to collaborate on the Georgetown University Energy Prize, a competition to encourage innovative, replicable, and scalable approaches to reducing energy use in communities across the United States. 

The Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) announced that its Contractor Comfort Index (CCI) for September was 67, up from 66 in August, indicating that HVAC contractors’ outlook on short-term growth is continuing to be strongly positive.

Matthew Stohner has been appointed as the new president of Powerhouse Boiler Equipment, a family-owned company located in Delanco, N.J. Paul Stohner, former president, is now chief executive officer and acting as advisor to the company. Powerhouse sells, rents, and services commercial boilers.

LG Electronics USA has introduced the LG Multi V Water Mini, a new space-saving version of its variable refrigerant flow (VRF) HVAC system, which the company says is an ideal solution for high-rise buildings.
