Refrigeration systems are made up of major components in series with one another (see Figure 1). As most of us are well aware, the major components are the compressor, discharge line, condenser, liquid line, metering device, evaporator, and suction line.

Many of us remember the pre-internet days, when access to information was limited to books, newspapers, and other written materials, and controlling systems or machinery was generally confined to manually turning a dial or flicking a switch.

When replacing a failed component or accessory for a compressor, it is always best to use the one specified by the manufacturer. There are some components that may have a universal replacement, but you need to be sure the universal component is the right match for the component that needs to be replaced.

RSES has released the third edition of its Hydrocarbon Refrigerants study guide and eLearning course. The study guide and eLearning course are designed to assist HVACR professionals in understanding the requirements to safely maintain and service systems that utilize flammable refrigerants currently approved under the Environmental Protection Agency’s Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) Program.

Emerson has created a cold chain organization focused on supporting temperature-sensitive and asset optimization solutions wherever commercial goods are moved, stored, or sold. According to Emerson, the organization will offer customers a total-channel approach to protect foods and other critical cargo at every step along the cold chain — from grower and processor to distributor and retailer.

Giant Eagle was recognized as the supermarket retail chain with the lowest corporate-wide refrigerant rate in the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) 2017 GreenChill Partnership Annual Achievements. The Port Townsend Food Co-op was recognized for having the lowest emissions rate among small/independent grocers.

A-Gas, Bowling Green, Ohio, has acquired Diversified Pure Chem (DPC) LLC, Rhome, Texas. DPC, a reclaimer and supplier of refrigerant gases, operates 13 refrigerant collection and distribution hubs nationwide and has a 40,000 sq. ft. separation and blending facility in Texas. DPC offers a full line of refrigerants including HCFC and HFC replacements.

The Chemours Co. and Honeywell have filed a petition for rehearing of an appeals court’s decision concerning the phasedown of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA’s) Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) program.

Emerson has launched a refrigerant calculator designed to help retailers forecast the impacts of phasing down higher-global-warming potential (GWP) systems and phasing in new refrigerant architectures.
