Project Extends Cooling Capacity of the Largest Refrigeration System It Has Ever Built
January 20, 2014
Star Refrigeration designed and built Rogerstone Park’s existing refrigeration system in 1999 and extended the plant’s cooling capacity in 2005. In 2013, Star was again chosen to further extend the refrigeration capacity as part of an expansion plan at the site.
How-To Guidance for Commissioning Commercial and Industrial Refrigeration Systems

Sixty percent of energy use in supermarkets is attributed to refrigeration, and studies have shown commissioning could result in 7 to 25 percent energy savings. A new guide from ASHRAE outlines a commissioning process that could result in substantial savings.
When refrigeration systems are exposed to low-ambient conditions, the condensing pressure (head pressure) will fall. If the head pressure gets too low, the metering device will not have enough pressure drop across it to operate properly.
Any time an oil pressure control shuts down a compressor, the cause of the shutdown must be identified. The tripped control is a warning of another existing problem. Simply resetting the control will not solve the problem.
As HCFC-22 is phased out and alternative refrigerants enter the market, contractor attention and manufacturer intent will steer the market toward the best remaining refrigerant options.
For five months in 2013, The NEWS’ FROSTlines eNewsletter ran a series on retrofitting open display cases with doors in supermarkets. It proved to be prophetic because shortly after the series ended, closed-door display cases became a hot topic at the Food Marketing Institute Energy and Store Design Conference.
Danfoss’ periodic EnVisioneering symposia look at a wide range of HVACR issues and topics. For its most recent event this past fall in Baltimore, the focus was on refrigeration, both in terms of regulations and the latest in technology.
Refrigeration Manufacturer to Continue Commercial Focus

Krack Corp. has announced that it has sold the assets of its industrial business to SGS Refrigeration. SGS will sell the products it has acquired under a new SGS/Krack name in the industrial marketplace.
Picking Valves and Other Parts That Can Handle the Harsh Conditions Takes Extra Care

Valves control the flow of compressed air or other fluids, and on cylinders to control motion. But the cold truth is that low temperatures can cause problems for these fluid automation devices all along the line — from selection and delivery to operation and maintenance.
The suction line of a refrigeration system is normally insulated with a flexible, closed-cell elastomeric material. Insulating the suction line is done to prevent condensate from developing and dripping off. It also limits the amount of heat added to the refrigerant as it travels back to the compressor.
