An easy-to-use organophosphonate (OP) test for monitoring OP levels in boiler and cooling water systems is available. Using a specially developed tablet containing a pH buffer and screened indicator, this test eliminates the problems of pH adjustment and endpoint determination associated with the traditional test, the company says. The test uses a tablet, which combines a pH adjuster and buffer mixture together with a screened xylenol orange indicator. This dissolves in the sample to provide the correct pH conditions for the test. Then, the screen indicator produces a color change from green to purple as the decisive drop of thorium nitrate is added, states the manufacturer. The test has been developed for use with the most common commercially available OP products. Dechlorinating and defluorinating agents have been incorporated so that the test can be used on systems also being treated with chlorine and fluoride compounds.
