ARLINGTON, VA — According to the Air-Conditioning & Refrigeration Institute (ARI), combined U.S. factory shipments of 410,520 central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps for September were down 5% compared to shipments from the same month last year.

Heat pump shipments of 107,255 were up 12% compared to September 2000, and year-to-date unitary shipments are down 7% compared to last year.

Other a/c statistics for the month include:

  • September 2001 factory stocks were down 19,502 units from August 2001 and down 104,794 units from September 2000.

  • September 2001 distributor inventories were down 44,723 units from August 2001 and down 94,874 units from September 2000.

  • September 2001 distributor shipments were down 12% from September 2000 and year-to-date shipments are down 5%.
