GASTONIA, NC — Mirant Corporation, based in Georgia, has made plans to build a $500 million wholesale power plant near I-85 in Gastonia, NC. The completion of the Mirant plant would be one of the largest recent industrial investments in the state. Currently, the corporation has yet to apply to the state regulators to approve the project.
If approved, Mirant expects to begin construction next year and start producing electricity by 2004. The plant would be designed to provide for approximately 1.2 million homes in the area.
